Writing Models and Examples

Example-based support for recognizing strong academic moves without copying a model.

Use models as study tools

A model paper or paragraph is useful when students study how it introduces a claim, uses evidence, explains reasoning, and moves from one idea to the next.

  • Label the thesis, topic sentences, evidence, and analysis in the model.
  • Notice how the writer introduces and explains source material.
  • Compare the model to the rubric before applying its moves to your own draft.
