Research Expectations

A guide to responsible source use, evidence quality, and research habits for college writing.

Use sources with intention

Research should strengthen the writer's own argument. Sources provide context, evidence, examples, and expert conversation; they should not replace the writer's thinking.

  • Choose sources that match the assignment requirements and research question.
  • Evaluate credibility, relevance, date, author, and publication context.
  • Blend quotation, paraphrase, and summary instead of relying on long quoted passages.
